My name is Jody…welcome to Bacon Bits!
I’m overweight…I’m positive this is probably the first thing people notice about me when they first meet me.
I’m working on not being overweight…
See, I have been dieting on and off for my entire adult life (issues started as a child). I’ve had great result with Atkins low-carb several times in my life, but always ended up getting off track and gaining what I had lost back and then some. I’ve tried other diets such as Weight Watchers, calorie restriction, South Beach, cabbage soup diet…the list could go on a bit.
In December 2015, I was at my heaviest (sharing this number is scary for me…I will eventually, but not right now). Things had spiraled out of control and if I didn’t do something, I was going to have some serious health issues. My knees hurt daily, I couldn’t climb up more than 5 steps without becoming winded, and don’t get me started on chairs (check out what I mean HERE). The last couple of times at the doctor’s office, my blood pressure was elevated, which was scary. It was only a matter of time my health would be affected. I didn’t want to get to the point of needing medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. So far I had been lucky to remain pretty healthy considering my significant amount of extra weight I had been carrying for such a long time.
My primary care doc and I had a serious conversation about what my options were, which included weight loss surgery (WLS). March 21, 2016 I took the first step forward with my decision and met with Dr. Z, my bariatric surgeon. Between that initial consultation and August 15, 2016, I went through a 6 month monitored weight loss regiment (required by my insurance company) and on August 30, 2016, I had my surgery.
I had a procedure called the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. 80% of my stomach was removed. This sounded safer, if you can believe that, than the Gastric Bypass in which the stomach is made into a pouch the size of an egg and intestines are rerouted. My stomach is now shaped like a banana and holds about 4 ounces by volume (1/2 cup).
I did not make this choice in haste and truly felt it was my last resort to having a healthy life. I did my research like I do for any big decision I make in my life. I was prepared going in to this and I continue to educate and read after.
My biggest fear is that this won’t work either. That I will gain it all back…again. Like I always did in the past. This is as much a mental journey as a weight loss journey.
I have 2 dogs and 2 cats…they make me laugh and have made me cry. I’m sure there will be many pictures and stories I will share about them on here…this is a warning!
